Ananke

Hi, welcome to Telling the Story, I'm your host Fr. David Smith. Today's Telling the Story is inspired by the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, which falls on a Sunday this year. Her birth is truly the beginning of our salvation! But I've always been intrigued by the appearance in the Divine Liturgy itself of the name of one of the ancient Greek goddesses - the word does not refer to the goddess, it's there because in modern Greek the word means need, compulsion, or necessity. I wonder - what would this non-existent goddess say to try and gain followers today in our present culture? Today's Telling the Story is entitled "Ananke."

The Acceptable Year

Hi, welcome to Telling the Story I'm your host Fr. David Smith. Today's Telling the Story is inspired by the gospel for the Indiction - that is, the Ecclesiastical New Year - from St. Luke's gospel (4:16-22). In that gospel, our Lord announces His Messiahship by quoting from the prophet Isaiah, chapter 61. I wonder what was going through Isaiah's mind when he received these words from God, and how he imagined that they would be used in the future? Today's Telling the Story is entitled "The Acceptable Year."

Why Did I Do That?

Hi, welcome to Telling the Story, I'm your host Fr. David Smith. Today's Telling the Story is inspired by the gospel reading for 9th Sunday of Matthew, St. Matthew's gospel chapter 14, verses 22 - 34, the story of our Lord Jesus (and briefly, St. Peter) walking on the water. I wonder what St. Peter was thinking about that incident when the boat finally made it to the shore? Today's Telling the Story is entitled "Why Did I Do That?"

Matthew

Hi, welcome to Telling the Story, I'm your host, Fr. David Smith. Today's Telling the Story is inspired by the 8th Sunday of Matthew, St. Matthew 14:14-22, it's the feeding of the 5000. I invite you to go into the mind of St. Matthew with me as he finds himself in a large group of hungry people, and he's the only one who thought to bring food. Today's Telling the Story is titled, "Matthew."

Two Healed Men

Hi, welcome to Telling the Story, I'm your host, Fr. David Smith. Today's Telling the Story is inspired by the gospel of the 7th Sunday of Matthew, St. Matthew 9:27-35, the story of the two men healed of their blindness by our Lord. Every time I read this, I wonder: why did Jesus instruct the healed men to tell no one about the miracle? Today's Telling the Story is entitled "Two Healed Men."
